The area has been hit by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake. The earthquake hit close to , after 4 p.m. on January 9, 2010. The quake hit about 25 west miles of and was in the ocean. There have been reports of TV and power outages and considerable property damage but no injury reports.
Aftershocks of the quake have been felt as far south as . Smaller quakes have shook the area the last few days. There is evidentially no tsunami threat from this event.
Residents of the area: 94 year old Eurekan, Ms. E Christopher described the quake as the worst she has ever experienced; Mrs. A. Keefer "I felt it here, while at my desk. It was a rolling shake but seemed to last a long time. I had time to look around to see if it was either of the dogs causing it. Also heard from a gal who was on having a boat ride and they knew nothing about it. Haven't heard what their house looked like when they got home though"; Mr. R Ames says "SCART as hell... Very minor damage done...fallen pictures in our house. Downtown is down !! Broken gas mains no power that's all I know"
I was in Alaska during the Good Friday earthquake of 1964 and can attest to the fear generated when the earth shakes. Let us pray there were no serious injuries and that the aftershocks are mild .
